1900km+ travelled since Sydney and we found ourselves in a tiny and quiet town, Baird Bay, with around 20 houses, a campsite and an outfit for swimming with sea lions and dolphins in their natural state. And the sunset… wow. - Mum

We swam with the sea lions and then we got hot chocolate. I was scared. - Marshall

VISA and Pedestrian.tv recently asked me to share one of my worst travel experiences involving lost cash.

As a toddler I haven’t got much cash to loose, but we did once leave behind my nappies on a flight and then I had a big accident. We had to make trousers out of my jacket, as documented here. We also left our wallet in our hotel room in Istanbul, which made matters much worse.

Mum now carries a card in a separate place apart from her wallet. And I am now potty trained.

If you have a story involving lost or stolen cash you can share it here and enter to win one of 3 $20,000 Holiday Replays from VISA. You can also read my interview on  Pedestrian.tv.

And here are some more travel moments for your enjoyment:

We’ve had patchy internet at best – currently on Day 9 but sharing retrospectively a few photos from our first day on the road.

Day 1: drove out of Sydney, through the Blue Mountains and just north of Bathurst to a unique, privately owned park, “Artisans Park“, where we slept in a converted 1949 London Bus overlooking a beautiful valley. The bus was acquired and converted by a builder/sculptor whose property was once home to a slew of kooky things he built to sleep in (a rocket, a UFO) but it all got too busy for him and he’s since pared it back to just the bus. Great way to start the journey.

- Mum

We stayed at the big red London bus and I played in a rocket and on the swings and it was my favourite.

Nearly 10 years ago Scott and I eloped and got Married in Las Vegas. Without any grand plans we left our separate homelands and came to Australia to start off somewhere new together. Here, we bought our first apartment, got our first real jobs and had our first child. Sleeping for the last night in our empty place in Sydney I say goodbye for now with a very heavy heart, but am also excited about our big adventure ahead.
- Mum

When I leave Sydney I feel sad but I be excited on the Super Adventure. I am going to miss our house most. I am excited about Legoland.
- Marshall

However you look at it, Australia has been really good to us, so it was always going to be emotional leaving. But there’s nothing like 25,000km traveling with your best friends to give you something positive to look forward to. Roll on the next chapter.

(Today is actually the day before we leave but has been the first day I’ve had time to update.)

Day -4 We took the afternoon to pack Marshall and I’s bags. We did this very carefully *before* the movers came so that they didn’t pack anything up we wanted (IE Lego) or needed (IE our passports) on the journey. It can be tough to pack for five months on the road, travelling through so many countries and having to carry it all, but we generally need less than we think.

Below Marshall and I go through in detail the things we will both be bringing:

MUM

Packing

1/ QWSTION “Office bag” This has a built-in laptop compartment and lots of pockets. Can be worn three ways. Good for a day bag.

2/ Kathmandu extra-large microfiber towel Normal towels take up a lot of space. This doesn’t.

3/ Kathmandu “Tropic” sleeping bag  A thin, light (weighs 630g) sleeping bag. We are travelling through summer everywhere.

4/ Toiletries and first aid, including spray antiseptic so we don’t need to touch cuts, bandages, ibuprofen (for children and adults), thermometer, Hydralyte powder for dehydration, water purification tablets, RID bug repellent, sunscreen, aloe vera, toothpaste, toothbrushes, multi-purpose soap.

5/ Cuddly toy sloth It’s always nice to have a familiar friend.

6/ A good book This is my book and I will bring it so I can sit back and actually make my own patterns at leisure/show it to people.

7/ My knitting kit Including 2 sets of 4mm double-pointed needles, one circular needle and a wool needle.

8/ A trusty umbrella

9/ Universal plug adapter

10/ Bellroy travel wallet

11/ Trusty Swiss Army Knife Including scissors, which are helpful for knitting and the knife which is great for peeling fruits and veg so we don’t have to wash them.

12/ External back up battery charger Claims to have 10x charges for an iPhone in it. We will let you know how we go! Can charge anything with a USB.

13/ Wide-brimmed hat

14/ Two weeks’ worth of clothing packed into a Flight 001 packing organiser This thing is great as it has one side for the clean items and a compartment in the back for the dirty.

15/ Laptop

16/ Flip video camera

17/ Phone in Lifeproof waterproof case

18/ Waterproof satchel for delicate and important things

19/ Camera

20/ Sunglasses

21/  Kathmandu “Monrovia” waterproof jacket

22/ A pair of sturdy and stylish Camper sandals

23/ A pair of mesh Puma “Mostros” These are a old pair of running shoes that are super light and breathable

MARSHALL

Packing

1/-11/ On the super adventure we are bringing my toys, my clothes and my boots. My train tracks and lego.

Over the next six months this blog will no doubt showcase a series of inspirational travel photos that will make us look very glamorous and fun. There will also be photos showcasing the mundane, tiring and unsexy parts of travel. These photos represent the latter.

Getting to the pointy end of packing what we want to take on the journey (not too much), what we are going to be shipping to Europe (quite a lot) and what we will give away/bin, a sorting-induced trance took my attention away from Marshall for long enough that I actually realised I couldn’t find him. In our 90-square-metre apartment.

After yelling his name with no response I ran into his room to find him curled up, asleep in his toy teepee. I guess we have to ship that one.
